April was the 12th month of year-over-year increases in Total Expenses and Total Non-Labor Expenses, while Total Labor Expenses have increased from the prior year 11 of the past 12 months. 

Median hospital operating margins held steady at 0.4% for a second month after 15 months in the red, according to the latest Syntellis Performance Trends Report. While this suggests hospitals may be stabilizing financially, margins remain extremely thin and hospitals face significant headwinds from rising levels of bad debt and charity care and ongoing expense increases, including high nursing labor costs.
